<p><strong>Background:</strong> The New North Social Media Breakfast was founded in March 2009 by Dana VanDenHeuvel of <a href="http://www.marketingsavant.com/">Marketing Savant</a> in partnership with <a href="http://www.weidert.com/">Weidert Group, Inc.</a> and <a href="http://www.goelement.com/">Element</a>. The group of local professionals meet monthly, rotating between Green Bay and Appleton locations, to discuss how social media is impacting their businesses. To cater to the diverse needs of this growing group of professionals, the New North Social Media Breakfast has burst out of the coffee shop setting and into the community. The breakfast will now be held at various local businesses each month with a panel that will discuss how social media is impacting their industry.</p>

<p>If you follow <a href="http://www.jaffejuice.com/2010/01/keynote-for-a-cause.html">Joseph Jaffe</a> (and if you don&#8217;t you will after this post), you may have noticed that he and <a href="http://www.twistimage.com/blog/archives/keynote-for-a-cause---help-haiti/">Mitch Joel</a> have both posted a challenge called &#8220;Keynote for a Cause&#8221; to donate 100% of the proceeds from a keynote speech to the victims of the earthquake in Haiti.  This weekend, <a href="http://blogs.sas.com/socialmedia/index.php?/archives/62-Your-social-media-knowledge-can-help-Haiti.-Yes,-you..html">David Thomas of SAS</a> jumped on board offering his social media expertise in the form of a workshop from which he will donate all of the proceeds to the Red Cross.</p>
<p>This got me thinking and inspired me to act as well.  My wife and I already donate the largest portion of our charitable funds each year to Project Haiti through St. Edward and Isidore Parish here in Green Bay, WI &#8211; a group that sponsors medical and other missions to Haiti several times each year.</p>
<p>Like David, I don&#8217;t command tens of thousands of dollars for a keynote speech, and I&#8217;m not really a keynoter anyway.  What I do well is teach organizations how to use social and new media for marketing. When we find ourselves in a situation like this, it&#8217;s a call for all of us to use whatever talents we have to make a difference in the situation at hand.  So, with that, I&#8217;m throwing my hat in the ring to offer up two Workshops for Haiti.</p>
<p><strong>So, how will this work?</strong></p>
<p>It&#8217;s simple.  You need some social media expertise and your humanitarian side wants to help those in need of our help in Haiti, so you raise the bid on the social media workshop and feed your need for knowledge and make an impact in your world all at once!  The funds will be split between Project Haiti and The Red Cross.</p>
<p><em><strong>You get an on-site, state-of-the-art half-day social media workshop customized for your organization.</strong></em></p>
<p><strong>The particulars:</strong></p>
<p>My <a href="http://www.marketingsavant.com/docs/2009_danavandenheuvel.speaking.info.kit.pdf">half-day social media workshops normally start at $4500</a> but for this I&#8217;m setting the reserve price at $1500 and we&#8217;ll work up from there.</p>

Sales, deals, discounts and price cuts have become the way of the American business culture, or so it seems.</p>
<p>In her recent book, &#8220;Cheap: The High Cost of Discount Culture,&#8221; author Ellen Ruppel Shell opens with the following statement that should send chills down the spine of any business owner:</p>
<blockquote><p>&#8220;This book is about America&#8217;s dangerous liaison with Cheap. In a market awash with increasingly similar — even identical — goods, price is the ultimate arbiter, the lower the better.&#8221;</p></blockquote>
<p>While you may think the discounting or the &#8220;sale culture&#8221; Americans have been taught to respond to is the real issue, I believe it&#8217;s little more than a red herring. It&#8217;s all about pollination and cross-pollination.  </p>
<p>An idea from Erie makes it to Lincoln and is adapted in Chicago, re-formed in Orlando and lands in Green Bay.  I&#8217;m always amazed at what you can learn on the road. There are some things that just can&#8217;t be experienced sitting behind a desk or even running around town meeting with clients.  Getting out to new places, new states, unfamiliar towns and chatting it up with people from everywhere give one a perspective that I feels adds a tremendous amount of value for everyone involved.  Nevertheless, after nearly six weeks of on and off travel, it&#8217;s great to be home for a couple of weeks around Thanksgiving.  If nothing else, Lucy the office dog is happy about it (photo is not of Lucy&#8230;but it looks just like her). </p>
<p>As marketers, our job is to bring fresh blood, new ideas, energy, creativity and a novel approach to what we do. As thought leaders, our job is to listen to our constituents, from all over, in a way that gives us meaningful insight into what they need from us. We, in turn, then need to turn around solutions and ideas that drive real value for them.</p>
<p>If you&#8217;ve not taken some time to think, travel, gather ideas from somewhere else and cross pollinate, perhaps you can find some time in the new year to do that.  You&#8217;ll be amazed at the results. Attend a conference across the country or even a networking meeting across town.  When I look back on 2009, the cross-pollination that&#8217;s gone on because I simply &#8220;got out there&#8221; still amazes me.  As always, I&#8217;m humbled by how much there is to learn and how much other people have to share.  I hope to see you out there&#8230;learning and sharing!</p>
