Tomorrow Will Be Better
When management consultants study employee engagement, they find that there are two critical factors that determine whether an employee is truly engaged in the success of the organization or if they are simply an anchor dragging the company down.
Those two things are:
1) The employee clearly sees and believes that the future will be better than the present and,
2) That they have the opportunity to influence that better and bigger future.
Your customers are engaging or disengaging with your business for the very same reasons. We saw many, many businesses that didn’t survive the depths of the 2009 recession. The simple reason for that is because they didn’t have enough actual revenues from actual customers, but it’s not really that simple.
The current and prospective customers can usually see that there’s no future and that their being a customer has no effect on the outcome. That’s one of the things that drive them away. More to the point, you need to engage them in your future. Take a page from what Starbucks is doing with their MyStarbucksIdea.com and gather customer insight on an ongoing basis.
