What Do You See in Your View-Master?

Remember the Fisher-Price View-Master? When I was a kid (though I never had one – I preferred and Etch-A-Sketch), I recall friends and family having a View-Master toy whenever we went over to their homes. You know, the thing where you press a button and a variety of pictures show based on the disc that you inserted.
According to Mary J. Lore, the way we perceive our reality is much like how we see the pictures in a View-Master. The disc is our typical area of focus, and never mind that there are dozens of other discs (perspectives) that we could view, we typically have one that we see the world through.
Try this exercise:
Look around the room and take note of everything you see that is either green or has some green in it. Done? Great.
Now, close your eyes, (after you read this, of course…which takes some of the fun out of it) and recall to mind everything you saw that was blue. Unless you’re super-perceptive, I’m betting that you can’t recall much, if anything, that was blue.
There are examples abound that illustrate the gap in our perceptations based on the lens or world-view that we typically have. (like the Moonwalking Bear video…I love that one!) My point here is that for this week (or, this minute), take the time to think of seven (7) beliefs that you have about your current marketing efforts. These are all things that you’re seeing through your disc in the View-Master. What happens if you switch discs? What do you see now?
Such as:
We need more leads
Social media doesn’t work in our industry
My customers are motivated by X
…and so on.
